Tactics used by the Allies and Axis in World War II
· Used Sea, Air, and Land Tactics for many various types of battles.
· Air Warfare – Consisted of various planes that were used for attack, support, and destruction. Bombers were used to destroy the enemy's industry, cities, and morale. Also used planes to attack the enemy's troops on the battlefield.
Examples: Pearl Harbor, Battle of Britain
· Naval Warfare – Consisted of many various types of ships, boats, and submarines. Submarines were the major menace to shipping at sea. Aircraft Carriers were also a significant development to naval warfare in World War II. They could carry planes and equipment throughout the sea, and proved very useful in many battles. Amphibious Assault was also used which consisted of using landing crafts to transport personnel and weapons to attack by sea.
Examples: Battle of Midway, Battle of the Coral Sea, Operation Overlord (D-Day)
· Land Warfare – Consisted of various units such as Infantry, Tanks, and Artillery. Tanks were fast, low, heavily armored vehicles armed with powerful large and small caliber guns. Used for destruction of enemy personnel, equipment, and weapons. Artillery was used to bomb and destroy the enemy’s resources. This consisted of the recoilless rifle, rocket launchers, and heavy artillery guns. Infantry units were the main source of fighting in World War II, and consisted of Soldiers armed with automatic and semi-automatic weapons, as well as other explosives and armaments.
